The primary selection principle is "product demand-oriented," determining the equipment type based on feed type and core performance indicators. For producing floating fish feed, high-fiber aquatic feed, and complete pet food, a wet extruder is essential, as its precise control of moisture and temperature meets core requirements such as water resistance and easy digestibility. For producing pet treats (dried meat, chew sticks), sinking aquatic feed, and low-moisture specialty feeds, a dry extruder is preferred, enabling low-moisture molding and energy-efficient production. For example, producing floating feed to enhance koi color requires a wet extruder to ensure expansion rate and water resistance time; while producing leather-flavored chew sticks for dogs, the high-hardness molding effect of a dry extruder is more suitable.

Production scale is a crucial factor in equipment selection, determining equipment capacity and supporting systems. For small-scale production (monthly output < 100 tons, hourly capacity < 0.5 tons): Dry extruders are preferred due to their low initial investment, simple operation, and lack of specialized steam maintenance personnel, making them suitable for family workshops or startups. For medium-scale production (monthly output 100-500 tons, hourly capacity 0.5-2 tons): The choice depends on the product type. If both pet snacks and regular feed production are involved, one dry extruder and one small wet extruder can be used. For large-scale production (monthly output > 500 tons, hourly capacity > 2 tons): Wet extruders are essential. Their energy efficiency and quality stability at scale can meet the demands of large-volume orders, and automation systems can reduce labor costs.

Raw material characteristics and cost budgets must be considered together. If the raw materials are mainly dehydrated meat meal and low-fiber grains, and the budget is limited, dry extruders are the most cost-effective choice. If the raw materials contain a large amount of fresh minced meat and high fiber content, even with a tight initial budget, wet extruders should be prioritized to avoid later production problems. Furthermore, geographical resources must be considered: in areas with ample steam supply (such as proximity to thermal power plants), wet extruders have lower steam costs; in areas with abundant electricity resources and favorable electricity prices, the energy cost advantage of dry extruders becomes more apparent.

The final decision can employ a "three-dimensional evaluation method": scoring across three dimensions—product indicators (core needs), production scale (capacity requirements), and cost budget (economic needs)—and selecting the equipment type with the highest overall score, ensuring a scientific and rational selection.
